Let us<\/span> therefore<\/span> come<\/span> bold<\/span>ly<\/span> unto the throne<\/span> of grace<\/span>, that<\/span> we may obtain<\/span> mercy<\/span>, and<\/span> find<\/span> grace<\/span> to<\/span> help<\/span> in time of need<\/span>.<\/span><\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Hebrews 4:16<\/a><\/p>\n

Children and their moms and dads provide a picture of our inborn need for God. Babies nuzzle mommy\u2019s cheek when hungry and nestle into her shoulder in sleep. Preschoolers skin their knees and make a beeline\u00a0straight to mom for that hug, \u201cbooboo\u201d kiss, and super-hero bandaid. The first day at school,\u00a0looking up to her daddy,\u00a0that little girl\u00a0transfers her hand from his to that of the kindergarten teacher\u2019s.<\/p>\n

When his drawings of people become more life-like,\u00a0the wee budding artist\u00a0shyly and proudly shows his progress to his mommy.\u00a0The young girl\u00a0feels herself the one less-valued in a three-some friendship, and\u00a0retreats to mom, through tears, for her to remind her of her true value. When\u00a0the\u00a0youngest son\u00a0is bullied as the littlest in the class, he\u00a0takes courage in\u00a0his dad\u2019s big love.\u00a0Chemistry homework fills up the daughter\u2019s\u00a0evenings, night\u00a0after night, and\u00a0she\u00a0cries out to her daddy knowing he\u2019ll help her figure something out.<\/p>\n

A lonely 9th grader\u00a0becomes a sought-after baker in his\u00a0school and mom gives place for him in the kitchen.\u00a0Facing another move, because of dad\u2019s job,\u00a0that daughter\u00a0deals bravely with entering a new high school.\u00a0An adolescent son\u00a0misses the cut for the soccer team and\u00a0grieves so hard it pierces the heart of his praying mom.<\/p>\n

Then he rallies\u2026with basketball and music<\/a>. She rallies\u2026graduating with honors and a life-long friend.\u00a0The youngest\u00a0rallies to find his way in life, melding the hard experiences into character.<\/p>\n

So it goes as children grow up and no longer need their parents as before. The analogy to our need for God breaks down here, because we never outgrow our need for Him<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Matt Maher<\/a>, in telling the story behind the song<\/a> \u201cLord, I Need You<\/em>\u201d talks about how\u00a0C. S. Lewis describes\u00a0\u201cneed-love\u201d.\u00a0It is very different from other loves.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cNeed-love cries to God<\/strong> from our poverty; Gift-love longs to serve, or even to suffer for, God; Appreciative love says: \u201cWe give thanks to thee for thy great glory.\u201d Need-love says of a woman \u201cI cannot live without her\u201d; Gift-love longs to give her happiness, comfort, protection \u2013 if possible, wealth; Appreciative love gazes and holds its breath and is silent, rejoices that such a wonder should exist even if not for him, will not be wholly dejected by losing her, would rather have it so than never to have seen her at all.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 C. S. Lewis, The Four Loves <\/a><\/p>\n

Need-love, as in the song \u201cLord, I Need You<\/em>\u201d comes from a heart that is aware of its lack and knows who can fill the emptiness. Need-love, on the flip side, moves us to respond to the good in our life, the joy and blessing, with\u00a0gratefulness to God. With so much love. Sometimes, we hear people in our culture express thanks and yet the thanks seems to float out into the air with no place to land. God is our place to land.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 Blaise Pascal<\/a>, French Physicist and Philosopher<\/div>\n

\u00a0\u201cI know that everyone is going to go to God in their darkest need and struggle. My hope is that at some point it isn\u2019t just that you go to God in your need but that you are so overwhelmingly hit between the eyes\u00a0with the love of God that you would go to\u00a0Him in your joy. In your joy, you would still say, \u201cEvery hour I need You\u201d, not just in your brokenness, in your darkest times. There is always a reason to have joy. As believers, we can show witness by leaning on God in times of hardship but also\u00a0leaning on God in times of joy and celebrating.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 Matt Maher<\/a><\/div>\n

I grew up singing favorite hymns\u00a0from hymnals, by page number\u00a0 \u2013 #379. Annie Hawks<\/a>\u2019 \u201cI Need Thee Every Hour<\/em>\u201d was one of those songs.\"Blog<\/a><\/p>\n

Matt Maher and a team of song-writers\/worshippers have brought us again to God, as His children eager to share our need for Him and our joy in Him.<\/p>\n
