My One Comfort. <\/strong>What would you say is yours?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We look to loved ones and friends for comfort. Sometimes we even lean on rickety counterfeit comforts (food, drugs\/alcohol, entertainment) to help us get through…or escape from…the challenges of our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This song “My One Comfort”<\/a><\/em> is new to me, although it’s been out for several years now. The lyrics deeply resonated with my heart and mind. The Lord is truly our one solid and forever comfort. He is the rock of our lives, no matter the storm. Because of Him, we can stand against whatever comes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this song, I discovered the Heidelberg Catechism<\/a>. It has not been part of my church or worship tradition. Studying it this week has been a blessing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first Question and Answer of the Catechism reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Thy only comfort in life and death?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The answer is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That I with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong unto my faithful Savior Jesus Christ; who, with his precious blood, hath fully satisfied for all my sins, and delivered me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my heavenly Father, not a hair can fall from my head; yea, that all things must be subservient to my salvation, and therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me sincerely willing and ready, henceforth, to live unto him.<\/em> – Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 1<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
