Missing fathers from our lives. A young woman with three small children facing eviction because of a father who abused and then deserted them. Afghan refugees and friends sorting through their own losses and fighting to build their lives here. Taking in the intensity of Juneteenth and the experience of freedom for all of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As happens sometimes, a simple song, and the not-so-simple question in its title, settles in my brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>\u201cHow Can You Mend a Broken Heart?\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether the Bee Gee\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2sN05AMV9gY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">epic original<\/a> or Al Green\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K9YIq0oNiSM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">amazing cover<\/a>. A dear friend whose husband wants another future. A friend who spent his Father\u2019s Day without his children (because his ex-wife chose a different future). Friends who lost their fathers before this Father\u2019s Day\u2026or parents who lost their children (whether to death or to an estranged life). Friends heartbroken over the what-ifs or what-may-never-be\u2019s.&nbsp; Fill in the blank with your own. #BrokenHearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[Too heavy for a Monday morning? It does get better.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe you aren\u2019t so aware of broken hearts. Maybe you haven\u2019t had the experience of sitting on the phone of a friend scream-weeping at the hard reality of her life right now. Maybe you haven\u2019t worked beside a friend whose stone face and deep quiet haven\u2019t touched your awareness of what is going on under the surface of his silence\u2026his pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broken hearts can take us on spirals that lead to self-protective withdrawal, confused anger, terrifying isolation, or hard bitterness.<a href=\"http:\/\/debmillswriter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Blog-Bitterness-Lee-Strobel-quote-azquotes-1.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/debmillswriter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/debmillswriter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31915\" srcset=\"https:\/\/debmillswriter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-6.png 850w, https:\/\/debmillswriter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-6-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/debmillswriter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/image-6-768x361.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo Credit: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.azquotes.com\/quote\/918186\" target=\"_blank\">AZ Quotes<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Or we can heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best TED talks I have ever heard is on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guywinch.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>\u201cHow to Fix a Broken Heart\u201d<\/em><\/a> with psychologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guywinch.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Guy Winch<\/a>. Check out its 12 minutes of wisdom and helps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also found some helps in a somewhat odd place: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kristinweberonline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kristin Weber<\/a>\u2018s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Adulting-Jesus-Trusting-Obviously-Burritos\/dp\/0830781854\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Adulting for Jesus<\/em><\/a>. Whatever you currently think about Jesus, this book on adulting is refreshing, funny sometimes, and so real. Midway of the book she talks about developing something she calls <em>Godly grit<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAdulting requires learning how to fall and get back up again, and again, and again.\u201d \u2013 <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Adulting-Jesus-Trusting-Obviously-Burritos\/dp\/0830781854\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Adulting for Jesus<\/em><\/a><\/em>, p. 89<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weber presents 10 ways to shift perspective on the struggle (our heartbreak) and develop that grit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Expect hardship.<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cWestern comforts have lulled us into the false assumption that life is meant to be easy and the hard moments few. In reality, much of life is hard, and the easy moments are the exceptions.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em> We can learn to live in such a way that difficult situations\/relationships don\u2019t catch us off guard.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Depend on God.&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013<em> \u201c\u2026when a relationship [ends] abruptly, failure hurts \u2013 often deeply. We can be honest about our hurt and struggles while still trusting God.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>We don\u2019t ignore the pain of our broken heart, but we recognize that God hasn\u2019t gone anywhere. He sees; He hears; He will work on our behalf.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ask \u201cWhat\u2019s Next?\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cRather than ask \u2018Why me?\u2019\u2026ask a different question about life: \u2018What\u2019s next?\u2019 Obstacles, especially a long string of them, can make us short-sighted. By asking \u2018What\u2019s next?\u2019 we recognize this failure or hardship isn\u2019t the end of our story\u2026Hardships will undoubtably change you, but keeping a long-term perspective will prevent them from destroying you.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Look at Adversity through Eternal Lenses.<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cAs a child of God your trials, both big and small, have an expiration date.\u201d <\/em>When our hearts are broken, we are consumed and exhausted by our loss. We can\u2019t see down the road but so far. <a href=\"https:\/\/barbaraleeharper.com\/2015\/10\/10\/31-days-with-elisabeth-elliot-do-the-next-thing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>\u201cDo the next thing\u201d<\/em><\/a>. Eternity comes but until then we grieve the loss, but we also train ourselves to stay in the moment and hope for a better future\u2026a different future. We have that confidence in God\u2019s care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Appreciate the Bottom.<\/strong> \u2013<em> \u201cA lot can be learned on the bottom step of the ladder\u201d. <\/em>Our broken hearts can bring us low\u2026but that is not where we stay. That is not where we belong.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Develop Thick Skin and a Tender Heart.<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cTry to be slow in getting offended and quick in extending grace. If someone causes you to have a knee-jerk reaction, that person controls you. That person has all the power\u2026Choosing a calm response and keeping a level head, you remain free to live your life.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Be Teachable.<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cThough we don\u2019t need to let the opinions and critiques of everyone we encounter control our lives, we do need people who can lovingly speak truth into our lives\u2026Our natural instinct is to make excuses or get defensive when someone corrects us, but adopting an attitude of teachability puts us on the track to growth and maturity. We need to take ownership of our actions and be humble enough to receive input about where we can improve.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do Something.<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cBig changes happen through tiny actions, and tiny actions require doing something.\u201d <\/em>Every day\u2026step by step. #MakeYourBed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Laugh. <\/strong>\u2013<em> \u201cOnce I learned to laugh at myself and find humor in situations that didn\u2019t tip in my favor, I became less stressed and anxious about every little thing. I didn\u2019t dread life or failure as much\u2026Our hope isn\u2019t ultimately in everything going our way, and humor keeps the weight of our circumstances from crushing us.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Count Your Blessings.<\/strong> \u2013 <em>\u201cInstead of focusing constantly on everything that\u2019s going wrong, take time each day to remember what\u2019s going right. We might find our \u2018gratitude attitude\u2019 changes our entire outlook on life.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks, Kristin.
